How many times a day do you talk to your TV? If you’re not in the habit of doing this, then I recommend you have a go – try it now, go ahead, turn it on, choose your preferred channel and watch for at least 5 minutes to get in the flow…
Then, start with a simple enough question:
‘What are you trying to tell me?’
If you’re tuned in to the news or a documentary or, say, a cookery show, then you might need to take a few notes for this one.
Then, crank it up a gear with question two:
‘What would you like me to do, based on what you’re telling me?’

Did you hear about the Global Crisis?
Now, you might have to think a bit longer on this one – if the news bulletin you might be watching is telling you (again) that there is a Global Financial Crisis on and that things are going to get much, much worse, you might think at first that there’s something to be done, but if you listen attentively (to most current news bulletins at least), the underlying message is that actually there is nothing at all you can do, except worry and panic and resign yourself to things getting worse – it’s all beyond your control.
If instead you’re watching a documentary, they might want you to donate some money to a good cause, or recycle more of your own household waste, or expand your mind by reading up later on Quantum Physics…

Pass It On
Of course, you’re watching a cookery show, then the answer may be very different – it could be that they want you to get cooking, or that they want you to buy the latest celebrity chef’s cookbook for your friends and get them cooking, or just sit back and enjoy watching masters at work… it depends on the show.
Finally, try the third question:
‘In what ways is that an empowering thing for me to do?’
If you can think of lots of answers to that one, I suggest you either keep watching or go and actually do what the programme suggests.
If you can’t think of a single answer, simply ask your TV one more question:
‘What’s the best thing that can happen if I ignore what you’ve told me, stop watching type of programme and suggest to all my friends that they do the same thing too?’
There are no un-resourceful people, only un-resourceful states. So, if you must watch it, be sure you ask your TV a few questions once in a while and check what state you’re in.
So, what’s the best thing that can happen if you stop watching, (especially the news)?
Anything and everything you can possibly imagine…
