Hi Wendy,
thanks so much for your comments and for sharing your memories of Robert here - I'm so sorry that this post was the source of sad news for you. Robert was painting lots right up to when he had to leave for London for special treatment for his illness. I'm happy to say he was painting his beloved abstracts - his own pure expression - as well as his beautiful nudes and meticulous still lifes. I have some photos of some of them if you'd like to see them.
I miss him loads too - we were neighbours for several years in Spain and a group of us used to do life drawing in his studio, plus he was great with our two young boys - they loved his sense of humour (and he & Phaedra bought them a psp one Christmas, which they've never forgotten!).
And I think of him lots when I'm in my studio - I have a few bits and pieces Phaedra was kind enough to give me, including some of the outrageous music he used to play - so that keeps me smiling every time I play it.
My own fondest memories of Robert are all laughing, especially the time when he turned up to our favourite local restaurant on the beach dressed in a white suit and bow tie to play his newly-finished hand built guitar and kept us all entertained and in fits of laughter all evening... he really is a special soul...

I am sitting in my studio suddenly feeling really sad having just read that Robert died. A minute ago I was really happy about what I was painting which caused me to google Robert. I have just blended the parts of the vessel, which I am painting, which should be blended with the background & picked out two particularly successful parts of the vessel to accentuate with light. Robert was the best teacher I ever had for technical painterly advice, all the tutors at Art college & on post grad added together did not teach me as much as Robert did about life drawing & still life painting. I just wanted to try & get in touch with him again & see what he was painting.
Robert was such a wonderful person & I really enjoyed seeing the way you have captured him so well in your little movie. I loved the many Sunday group life drawing sessions in his studio in Kent in the 90s, the leisurely lunches & chats in the local pub.... Often think of Robert......

Hi Katherine!

So glad you like it - it was great fun filming him and it was lovely re-watching it today after reading your comment.

We filmed another little experiment with him too, which always makes me laugh remembering it - in fact, it was the first time I met him properly, filming this. I thought I'd ask the same 10 questions to 10 different artists and imagined I'd end up with 10 very different interesting short films.

When we filmed a test with Robert, I asked him the first question, which was simply 'What's your favourite colour?" and we had a hilarious conversation about the colour red, full of double-entendres and funny anecdotes with that mischievous sparkle in his eyes the whole time... 20 minutes later, we got onto question 2 in fits of laughter. And that was it, we were instant friends!

Still miss him loads and think of him often, especially when I'm in my own studio painting...

Thanks for commenting - it's lovely to know people are watching it.

My check-in!!!
Well, this was a toughie!!!! My achilles heel---I have decided--since 2012 is 20 days away---that organized is my theme for 2012.
I procrastinat and I beat myself up over it. I made my list with 7 activities for 7 days and I did the first day and promptly ignored the next 6 and I sit here typing and checking with myself and I still am not motivated to catch up and do the other 6---and they are all activities that benefit me! I am very glad to be looking myself squarely in the eyes and happy to be on board with getting organized. My fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants able to get by lifestyle have made organization a low priority---now that I am looking at succeeding conscientiously---I am going a bit easier on myself and invoking the learning curve and by this time next year
Yippie!!!
Cheers,
Katie

My check-in!!!
Well, this was a toughie!!!! My achilles heel—I have decided–since 2012 is 20 days away—that organized is my theme for 2012.
I procrastinat and I beat myself up over it. I made my list with 7 activities for 7 days and I did the first day and promptly ignored the next 6 and I sit here typing and checking with myself and I still am not motivated to catch up and do the other 6—and they are all activities that benefit me! I am very glad to be looking myself squarely in the eyes and happy to be on board with getting organized. My fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants able to get by lifestyle have made organization a low priority—now that I am looking at succeeding conscientiously—I am going a bit easier on myself and invoking the learning curve and by this time next year
Yippie!!!
Cheers,
Katie

lovely Katie Alder in Tokyo shares her story about doing this exercise:

Dear Michelle,
Thank you for your post card series no 1!!!!
My favorite book was Mrs. Piggle Wiggle---actually it is a series!
love Mrs. Piggle Wiggle!!!

The Piggle Wiggle Books are about children with bad habits---the distraught parents go to Mrs. Piggle Wiggle as a last resort. Mrs. Piggle Wiggle has magic potions and animals that provide the remedies.
--child has a bad habit
--parents on the edge
--Mrs P.W. called in
--Mrs. P.W. works her magic
--Child cured
--Parents happy!!!
I love the very funny way that the children are reformed!!!
AND—I am a bad habit child---I want a Mrs. Piggle Wiggle in my life

I am like Mrs Piggle Wiggle in that I support and encourage people to live
their dreams and to be positive. Mrs. Piggle Wiggle only sees the best---everyone
is a diamond!!!! I am working on this skill!!!

My story:

Katie Adler leaves big messes wherever she goes. Order and organization and tidiness are not found in her vocabulary. She cares not, because she is always off to this activity or that activity. Her friends and family hate to visit and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is called in to help! Katie is “accidentally locked in her house with Tiggles-- a big mouse that Mrs. Piggle Wiggle brought with her when she came for tea. Tiggles loves Katie's messes. He chooses a pile and burrows in and chomps and chews and makes himself quite at home. Katie finds this quite intolerable and tries unsuccessfully to open the locked door to ask him to leave. She resorts to waiting for Tiggles to come out to eat and, when he is not looking, cleans the mess lickety split. This doesn't bother Tiggles because he just moves to the next mess. Well, Katie finally gets busy and cleans and organizes her house so that Tiggles has nowhere left to park. This is just fine with Tiggles, he heads for the door and it opens right up; he smiles and he says, “Don't worry about me! I have plenty of places where I will be comfortable and I can always return back here if you should have a place for me! I will know immediately for once I have visited a place it is on my radar!!!” From that day on, Katie had the orderliest, tidiest, most organizedest, house on the block!!!

My answer to the do three things differently challenge:
Breakfast of raw food!!!
Eye makeup!!!
Exercise to Spanish music!!

I have to tell you---I did this on Sunday and it is Friday and revisiting Mrs Piggle Wiggle and my bad habit has been delightful---ouch!!! And, the the three things differently challenge--just those three changes in my life--- are making a huge difference---more fun and committing to a shake-up of my routine has made me conscious of how I do other things!!!

Thank you so much!!

Sincerely,
Katie Adler
