A day away from habitual and ‘normal’ work patterns, experimenting with materials and techniques most of us probably haven’t tried, getting our hands dirty, playing, but also working – challenging our ways of seeing, our powers of perception, our ideas about creativity, and our translation of what we think we’re seeing into objects, portraits and purely visual forms.

Who it’s for

If you’re managing a team, of disparate personalities who need to work together collaboratively, this will put them through their paces and change the dynamics.
If you’re in a team, and you feel the way you work together could be so much better, then this will definitely help (and it’s fun!).

What we do

There are 3 ‘workouts’, each lasting 75 minutes. If we’re a large group, we’ll split into smaller groups. The groups rotate through the workouts, with relaxing breaks for coffee-lunch-tea and hopefully lively, informal discussions between each session:

  • Activity 1.: The Drawing Workout - Think you can’t draw? What is a ‘good’ drawing anyway? Here, we put you through your paces, make mistakes on purpose, and see things quite differently…
  • Activity 2.: Clay Speed Dating - How do you see other people? How do they see you? When you are working fast like this, with your hands deep in the physical, messy clay, your habitual way of looking at people changes, and what you ‘see’ is sometimes surprising.
  • Activity 3.: New Improved Self-Portraits with Glue - How do you see yourself? What qualities would you like to enhance or tone down? If you had 3 other lives to lead, what would you do in each of them? Using found pictures, drawing and scribbling, again working intuitively and quickly, explore some of the more hidden sides of your personality and passions and capture that energy.

What you get

The participants come away with; their shoebox, 5 clay portraits of themselves, an imaginary self-portrait and, if we’ve done our jobs right, a different way of seeing the things around them, and of seeing other people and themselves – both literally and also on a deeper, more profound level.
As their manager, you get a team with fresh perspectives and an experience which helps shift blocked or limited thinking.
